Dropping of items during treatment is inevitable. When it happens, there are two options.
Firstly, if the item is an instrument, it will need to be gently moved to the side so that it does not get stepped on. Make sure you pick it up when stripping the room of contaminated items.
The second scenario involves the suction unit. If we drop the suction, it is not possible to continue working without it or obtain a new one. We have to pick it up, clean it and replace the attachment so that treatment can continue.
We do this in the following way:
Firstly, we take off our gloves and perform hand hygiene.
Then, wearing clean gloves, we get a detergent wipe.
We then wipe the suction from cleanest to dirtiest, starting from the base of the tube and working our way to the attachment (the part that connects to the suction tip), removing the disposable tip in the process and placing the adapter back in its cradle.
We then remove our gloves, perform hand hygiene, reglove and set up a new suction attachment.
