Handpieces are semi critical instruments (or in the case of surgical handpieces, critical). They must be cleaned and sterilised after each use.
Cleaning must be done carefully to prevent damage – handpieces are delicate and may cost thousands of dollars each.
When handpieces arrive in steri after being used for a procedure, they must be inspected for damage and heavy soiling. Heavy soiling can be removed by holding the head of the handpiece under running water, using your thumb to block off the coupling end whilst wearing heavy duty gloves. If necessary, the head can be scrubbed with mild detergent. This must be rinsed off afterwards. They are then oiled using the NSK iCare mechanical oiler. This unit helps to flush oil through the item without leaving behind large amounts that may pool and leak out during sterilisation. Oiling can be done manually using a can alone with a nozzle, however the amount of oil left behind can be excessive. Once items have been oiled, they are then wiped over with an alcohol wipe to remove any excess. They are then bagged and sterilised in the autoclave.
You must ensure that handpieces are not submerged in water.

HANDPIECE MAINTENANCE
At Dental Boutique, we have a maintenance spreadsheet that tracks the number of handpieces each site has, and when they are sent off for routine maintenance or repair. It is essential that we track where and how many of our handpieces are in circulation due to their expense. They are a vital component of dental treatment.
FIRSTFIT HANDPIECES
Please see below for the correct way to remove Kavo couplings for FirstFit handpieces:

If at any time a handpiece becomes stuck or malfunctions, please ask for assistance from your Clinical Lead. This way they can address the problem and track any repairs or Maintenace that may be required.
