LOADING AUTOCLAVE TRAYS
We load autoclave trays according to the autoclave manufacturer’s instructions. Mocom B28 Futura autoclaves require packages to be placed paper side upwards and spaced so that there is minimal overlap and no bags folded over on themselves (apart from the folded seal). Steam needs to be able to circulate freely and contact all surfaces of each item in the load.
What is a Class 6 indicator?
A class 6 indicator must be included in each load of instruments. The indicator must be in a sealed autoclave bag/pouch.
We do not keep any indicators after use – they are disposed of in general waste.
Below are some examples of class 6 indicators that we use at Dental Boutique:

Here we can see an autoclave tray that has been loaded with instrument bags/pouches. They are placed paper side up as per the Mocom’s Futura series autoclave instructions for use.
You can see that there is a smaller bag in the lower right-hand corner. It contains the class 6 indicator.
Notice how the bags have minimal overlap. This is essential in allowing steam to circulate throughout the load during the sterilising cycle.

Here is a different view of the class 6 indicator.
We ensure that trays are not overloaded with packages/bags/instruments. There should be minimal overlap. Bags should not be folded to fit the trays (with the exception of the folded seal at the top of each bag). For larger items, it may be possible that only one or two may fit in a single load in the autoclave.
We ensure that each autoclave tray sits in the rack inside the autoclave chamber. This allows for adequate spacing between each tray for steam to circulate thoroughly.
When we load the autoclave, we ensure that we keep the outside of the unit clean. We open the door with clean hands, then wear gloves to pick up each tray and load the unit. Once this is done, we take off our gloves, perform hand hygiene and then close the door and switch on the cycle.
This video demonstrates how to correctly load the autoclave.
OTHER TYPES OF CHEMICAL INDICATORS WE USE AT DENTAL BOUTIQUE
Class 1 indicators: these are found on autoclave bags (both internal and external), and on autoclave adhesive tape used to secure surgical packs.

Above, clockwise from top left: class 1 indicator that has been processed and is now black – the oval shape is technically an internal indicator, and the rectangular shape is external; autoclave bag that has yet to be processed – note how the class 1 indicators are still light blue; surgical pack wrapped in blue drape with class 1 indicator tape securing it; class 1 indicator tape with before and after sterilisation.
Every autoclave cycle must have at a minimum a class 1 indicator inside. This is not an issue when processing items that are bagged in autoclave bags or wrapped and sealed with indicator tape, however if we are processing an entirely unwrapped load, it is essential to add an extra indicator. This is another reason why we add a class 6 indicator to every load regardless of the contents, as it reduces risk of error. We must always check whether the chemical indicator has changed when we unload cycles from the autoclaves and note this in the autoclave (steriliser) log entries on Core Practice and Principle.
